Overview of Different Types of Steel

Different types of steel exhibit varying properties due to variations in their composition and processing methods.

Carbon steel, one of the fundamental types of steel, is characterized by its high carbon content, offering exceptional strength and hardness. However, this type of steel can be less ductile and more susceptible to corrosion.

Alloy steel, a versatile category encompassing several types of steel, integrates additional elements like chromium, nickel, or manganese to enhance specific properties such as corrosion resistance, toughness, and heat resistance.

Stainless steel, a prominent branch among the various types of steel, contains chromium which forms a protective oxide layer, preventing rust and maintaining its appearance even in challenging environments.

Another significant category is tool steel, specifically designed for the manufacturing of tools. This type of steel boasts high hardness, exceptional wear resistance, and remarkable heat resistance, making it indispensable in various industries. Lastly, mild steel, among the different types of steel, features lower carbon content. It is more malleable and ductile than many other types, making it suitable for applications that require formability. However, it offers reduced strength compared to its counterparts.

  1. Carbon Steel

carbon steel

Carbon steel looks dull, and matte-like, and is vulnerable to corrosion generally there are three subtypes of carbon steel: low, medium, and high carbon steel, with low carbon steel containing 30% of carbon, medium .60%, and high 1.5%. They are exceptionally strong, which is why they are often used to make products such as high-tension wires, automotive parts, and other such items.

  1. Alloy Steel

Alloy steel is a mixture of several different metals and alloy steel tends to be cheaper, more resistant to corrosion, and is favored for certain car parts, pipelines, ship hulls, and mechanical projects. For this type of steel, the strength depends entirely on the concentration of the elements that it contains.

  1. Tool Steel

Tool steel is hard, heat resistant, and scrape resistant, and it is most often used to make metal tools, like hammers. Tool steel is made up of things like cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten which is why it has such advanced durability and heat-resistant features.

  1. Stainless Steel

stainless steel

Stainless steel is the most well-known steel type in the market. It is usually shiny and generally has around 10 to 20% chromium. This allows stainless steel to be resistant to corrosion and allows it to very easily be molded into varying shapes. Because of the easy manipulation, flexibility, and quality, stainless steel is used to manufacture surgical equipment, home applications, and silverware, and even implemented as exterior cladding for commercial/industrial buildings.
